Frederick Douglass: A Journey

Typography 3, Spring 2011 - Artist book based on a letter Frederick Douglass wrote to his former slave master and published in the local newspaper. The concept revolves around Frederick Douglass's escape from slavery and his arrival in my hometown of New Bedford, Massachusetts where he lived for 3 years. The book strives to show his journey by map and through Douglass's own words; his autobiographies served as the resource for his personal accounts. With it I hope to show how his journey and arrival and time spent in New Bedford shaped him into the great abolitionist he eventually became.
